Summer Festivities on the Way…………

With no charge for admission and a free programme, this year’s Ben Rhydding Community Fete will be held on the Valley Drive field, off Wheatley Lane, on Saturday June 17th from 2 – 4pm.

With all the usual attractions, including stalls, games, displays, croquet, bowls, a raffle and a bouncy castle, plus a two hour arena entertainment programme of live music, singing, dancing and gymnastics, as well as tea and beer tents, a barbecue and plenty of ice cream, there should be something for everyone.

The first fete was held in 2006, and over the years has proved itself an ever popular event on the social calendar, with many local community groups, schools, sports clubs, churches and charities taking part. “So this will be the Fete’s twelfth year” says Fete committee chair Mrs Karen Palframan, “and, as ever, we are grateful for key support from local businesses Audley Clevedon and The Wheatley Arms.”

This year’s event will include the culmination of the second Ben Rhydding Scarecrow Festival, which runs from Monday 29th May until 17th June in aid of the Marie Curie Hospice in Bradford.  All the ‘Guess the Film’ themed scarecrows will be on show at the Fete in the ‘Scarecrow Garden’ where the winners of the best categories will be announced. £1 trail sheets will be available from the Wheatley Arms where the trail starts, and there are daily prizes to be won. The Fete will also have an all-age Scarecrow fancy dress competition, with judging at approx. 2.30pm. The competition is free to enter and there will be prizes for the best fancy dress scarecrows.

“It looks like another bumper Fete ahead,” says Karen, “and we are particularly looking forward to the Ilkley Gymnastics Club performance in the arena. The club attended for the first time last year and their gymnastics display was amazing”. She added “The Fete is organised by the community, for the community; it takes some doing and we are in need of more volunteers on the day to help with the wide variety of tasks involved.”

Record crowds as Ben Rhydding fete celebrates ten years

From Ilkley Gazette.

BEN Rhydding’s Valley Drive field was buzzing on Saturday as a record crowd enjoyed the tenth anniversary of the Ben Rhydding Community Fete.

The Fete, which has become a regular date on the Ben Rhydding social calendar, was officially opened by Councillor Stephen Butler, vice-chairman of Ilkley Parish Council.

Entertainment included displays of dancing and gymnastics and stalls hosted by numerous local clubs, societies and charities. There was the chance to have a go at croquet and bowls, and, along with plenty of ice-cream and a bouncy castle, it all made for a fun-filled family afternoon for all ages attracting a record crowd.

With the theme of this year’s celebratory event combining the royal 90th birthday and the first year of the first Ben Rhydding Scarecrow Festival, it was appropriate that the scarecrow with the most votes was a representation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on St John’s Road. Stansfield Close was awarded best street for their Jungle Book scarecrows.

The winner of the scarecrow fancy dress competition was seven-year-old Freya Hein, whose very authentic costume was adorned with lots of black crows. The 2nd Bradford North Seeonee Beavers and Cubs also took part and all won a prize.

The tea tent did a roaring trade, burgers were barbecued and the Wheatley Arms manned the beer tent. Music was provided by the Singe n’ Swing Jazz Band.

“Altogether it was a great day and one of the most successful fetes to date,” said organiser Mrs Karen Palframan. “We’ve been going ten years now. We’ve grown a lot in that time, and are in need of some more people on the fete committee, so we’d be very pleased to hear from anyone who might be interested.”

*The scarecrow trail solution was ‘Happy Birthday HM’, and the prize of a meal for two at The Wheatley Arms was won by Emma Docherty and family, who also guessed the closest number of scarecrows on the trail.
